FACULTY SENATE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

Public Service

WHEREAS, the Mission Statement of the University at Buffalo notes the importance of service to the public as an integral part of our University's responsibilities, and

WHEREAS, President Greiner has indicated (by presidential policy dated March 17, 1993) that individual faculty are expected "to participate actively in university, professional and public service," and that each academic unit "must develop and adhere to written guidelines which define faculty responsibilities within that unit," and

WHEREAS, the University is, and increasingly will be, subject to scrutiny with respect to the contributions of our faculty and staff to the understanding and potential resolution of problems associated with societal needs, especially within the State of New York, and

WHEREAS, public service can be defined in broad terms as a form of scholarship which transcends and expands our traditional roles of research and teaching to include the generation, transmission, application and preservation of knowledge for the direct benefit of external audiences in ways consistent with our University and academic unit missions;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT:

      • Individual Faculties and Schools establish committees to define service in manners appropriate to the particular units, in manners consistent with overall University policy;
      • The Faculty Senate Committee on Public Service ("the Committee") be continued, with the charge to work directly with these Faculty and School-based groups;
      • The Committee (together with the Faculty Senate Committee on Tenure and Privilege, the Dean's Council, the Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Urban Affairs, and other relevant University groups) explore and suggest appropriate mechanisms to incorporate service as defined within and by units in the institution's reward and recognition policies, including promotion and tenure, and report annually to the Faculty Senate on its progress;
      • The Committee explore ways and means to bring the institution's contributions in this regard to the broader awareness of the publics which we serve; and,
      • The Committee be established for a period of four years, at which time the Senate will examine its impact and determine whether to continue it.
