WHEREAS, the Mission Statement of the University at Buffalo notes the importance of service to the public as an integral part of
our University's responsibilities, and
WHEREAS, President Greiner has indicated (by presidential policy dated March 17, 1993) that individual faculty are expected "to participate
actively in university, professional and public service," and that each academic unit "must develop and adhere to written guidelines which define
faculty responsibilities within that unit," and
WHEREAS, the University is, and increasingly will be, subject to scrutiny with respect to the contributions of our faculty and staff
to the understanding and potential resolution of problems associated with societal needs, especially within the State of New York, and
WHEREAS, public service can be defined in broad terms as a form of scholarship which transcends and expands our traditional roles of research
and teaching to include the generation, transmission, application and preservation of knowledge for the direct benefit of external audiences in ways consistent
with our University and academic unit missions;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT:
